ENERGY STAR Appliances: How Much Can You Actually Save?

You see the blue ENERGY STAR label on almost every appliance in the showroom. But is it worth specifically seeking out ENERGY STAR certified models, and how much will you actually save on your utility bills? We ran the numbers so you do not have to.

What ENERGY STAR Means

ENERGY STAR is a program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To earn the label, an appliance must meet strict energy efficiency standards that go beyond the federal minimum requirements. For most appliance categories, ENERGY STAR models use 10–50% less energy than standard models.

Refrigerators: $50–$80 Per Year in Savings

Refrigerators run 24 hours a day, making them one of the biggest energy consumers in your home. An ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator uses about 9% less energy than a standard model. Over a 12-year lifespan, that translates to roughly $600–$960 in electricity savings. If you are replacing a refrigerator that is 15+ years old, the savings jump dramatically — modern ENERGY STAR fridges use up to 40% less energy than older models.

Washing Machines: $70–$100 Per Year

ENERGY STAR washers use about 25% less energy and 33% less water than standard models. The annual savings come from both lower electricity bills and lower water bills. Front-load washers are inherently more efficient than top-loaders, but ENERGY STAR top-loaders have narrowed the gap significantly. Over a 10-year lifespan, expect to save $700–$1,000 with an ENERGY STAR washer.

Dishwashers: $25–$40 Per Year

ENERGY STAR dishwashers use about 12% less energy and 30% less water than standard models. While the annual savings seem modest, the water savings add up — an ENERGY STAR dishwasher uses about 3.5 gallons per cycle compared to 6+ gallons for older models. Over a 10-year lifespan, you save roughly $250–$400 plus significant water conservation.

Dryers: $20–$40 Per Year

Dryers are among the most energy-hungry appliances in your home. ENERGY STAR certified dryers use about 20% less energy than conventional models, primarily through moisture sensors that stop the cycle when clothes are dry rather than running for a fixed time. Heat pump dryers — which all carry the ENERGY STAR label — can save up to 60% in energy costs.

Is the Upfront Premium Worth It?

ENERGY STAR models typically cost $50–$200 more than their non-certified equivalents. Given the annual savings outlined above, most ENERGY STAR appliances pay for themselves within one to three years — and then continue saving you money for the remaining 7–10 years of their lifespan.

Additionally, many utility companies offer rebates for purchasing ENERGY STAR appliances. Check with your local provider — NJ residents can often find rebates through PSE&G and JCP&L programs.
