How to Maintain Your Kitchen Appliances and Extend Their Lifespan

Your kitchen appliances are some of the hardest-working machines in your home. A refrigerator runs 24 hours a day, a dishwasher handles over 200 loads a year, and your range endures thousands of hours of heat. With some basic maintenance, you can keep them running efficiently and avoid costly breakdowns.

Refrigerator Maintenance

Clean the condenser coils every 6–12 months. Dust and pet hair accumulate on the coils (usually located behind or underneath the fridge), forcing the compressor to work harder. Pull the fridge out, unplug it, and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment. This single task can extend your fridge’s life by years and reduce your energy bill.

Check and replace door gaskets. Close the door on a dollar bill — if it slides out easily, the seal is worn and cold air is escaping. Clean the gaskets monthly with warm, soapy water to prevent mold and keep the seal tight.

Set the right temperature. Your refrigerator should be between 35°F and 38°F, and your freezer at 0°F.

Dishwasher Maintenance

Clean the filter monthly. Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub. Pull it out, rinse it under hot water, and scrub with an old toothbrush. A clogged filter is the number-one cause of poor dishwasher performance.

Run a cleaning cycle. Once a month, place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run an empty hot cycle. Follow up with baking soda on the bottom and a short hot cycle. This removes grease buildup and eliminates odors.

Check the spray arms. Food particles can clog the small holes in the spray arms. Remove them periodically and poke out any debris with a toothpick.

Range and Oven Maintenance

For gas ranges: Remove burner grates and caps monthly and soak them in warm, soapy water. Use a pin or needle to clear any clogged burner ports. If a burner has an uneven or yellow flame, the ports likely need cleaning.

For electric smooth-tops: Clean spills immediately after cooking (once the surface cools). Use a ceramic cooktop cleaner and a razor scraper for baked-on residue. Avoid dragging heavy pots across the surface to prevent scratches.

For the oven: Use the self-cleaning cycle two to three times a year, not more. For regular cleaning, a paste of baking soda and water works wonders.

Washer and Dryer Maintenance

Clean the dryer lint trap after every load. This is non-negotiable for both efficiency and fire safety. Once a year, disconnect the dryer vent hose and clean out any lint buildup in the duct.

For front-load washers: Leave the door ajar between loads to prevent mold and mildew in the gasket. Wipe the door gasket dry after each use. Run a cleaning cycle monthly.

Check washer hoses. Inspect rubber supply hoses for bulging or cracking every six months. Replace them every five years, or upgrade to stainless steel braided hoses.

General Tips

Read the owner’s manual. Do not ignore unusual noises, leaks, or performance changes. Keep appliances level using a bubble level and adjustable feet to prevent excess vibration and wear.
