The home builder provided this new with our new home. This and the matchong freezer are poor quality. This refrigerator is 3.5 years old and is unable to keep the temperature even throughout the interior. The produce and meat drawers are freezing and ruining our food. Conversely, our GE Cafe series, 10 years old and in our garage, still functions fine. This Whirlpool was customized to be a side by side with the matching freezer. As built ins go it much shorter then the other brands, thus looks odd. The matching freezer (WSZ57L18DM03) had to have door replaced after one year because it could not hold temperature and had to have the thermometer replaced, as well as the freon. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this refrigerator or the matching freezer. Any repairs we are doing at this point is throwing good money after bad money.

BUYER beware. There is common issue with this fridge and it is not repairable. A lot of the reviews that you will find is the fridge will stop cooling. This is a common problem with this fridge where you will encounter the refrigeration will leak through time. The biggest problem is the leak happens inside the fridge where any technician would not have access to repair the leak. Eventually making it un repairable. Your next step would be to throw it out and buy a new fridge. Don’t waste your money on this fridge as you will expect to shell out money again to buy a new fridge because there is no way to fix that problem.

Only bought this unit because the original installed in Mar '15 completely quit after three years of service repairs and food spoilage. And since refrigerators are no longer standard industry sizes and we have the matching freezer unit built in, we didn't have another choice without major kitchen renovations. Somewhat disgusting that this unit which is currently being stored in our garage is going to end up in a landfill at four years old.

Worthless Whirlpool sidekick refrigerator. We paid for it in 2020, at a local True Value Hardware. One was in the warehouse ready to be sent. It kept disappearing from the warehouse but did not arrive for months, we were told, because the Big Box stores got priority. Waited 15 months!!! We wanted made in USA and Whirlpool so we waited. Finally got it unfortunately. The 3 level push button temperature was either freezing fresh vegetables or incubating bacteria (dangerous). I thought it was me, air circulation or something. Got multiple thermometers/alarms to monitor, constant adjustment was needed. So then, just after warranty was barely out, we noticed water on the floor and that it was freezing a line to the right of the compressor, a copper line had a coating like a pool noodle of white frost. Defrosted it, it worked awhile, temps got higher and the frost came back. This was indoors with heat and air! Called Worthless Whirlpool about the warranty. And of course they won't fix it. Out of warranty!!! Repairman says it could be up to $1600 to keep replacing parts to find the leak, many are tiny and fragile (I would think this product is bad for the environment leaking freon...times how many others??). Had we gotten the refrigerator when we paid for it, it would have been only 2 years and 2 months old We have used it about a year and a month when it froze up. The repairman says refrigerators last only 2 years these days. How can a company just sell people knowing this, and not improve, fix the appliances?? Look at all the bad reviews!! How many refrigerators like mine are headed for the landfill?? Filling it up and leaking freon???Be responsible Whirlpool!!Who can afford to replace a refrigerator every 2 years? He said it is the same no matter if it is a high priced one or a cheap refrigerator! This one, the sidekick, according to this page was about $1999 at some point. We paid $1600. Whirlpool knows refrigeration is essential to 1st world life. It is something there is no hack or DIY for. So they take our money for products that are *expected* to fail? No shame? I will never buy a Worthless Whirlpool again and include all companies associated! My daughter had similar experience with a Whirlpool dishwasher still under warranty and had to fight to get it fixed over and over, would not replace for months and months. I will tell my story wherever I have a place to do it and when people ask about a refrigerator. This review should get zero stars!

Complete cooling failure. Just like the other posts after 2.5 years refrigerator completely quits working. Appliance repair just advised it is not worth fixing because this set is trash. They wanted 1399 to fix and said they would be back within a few months. Bought extended warranty, they are giving us run around, have tried contacting whirlpool who at first claimed they would help with parts but now have backed out on that. You have soo many reviews on your site saying the same thing. These are all built in systems and it’s not like we can go buy a better brand. Maybe we all need to think of a class action lawsuit. Whirlpool has completely screwed us.

See my previous post below:On top of what has already happened now, 07/19/2017, it is leaking out the front and onto the floor. The door never shut tightly. It takes only the slightest force to opened and must be pushed hard to ensure any seal. The bottom of the seal doesn't seal tight causing condensation to build in the fridge. Once the depressed area under the drawers fills with condensate it then has nowhere to go but out the front. Another service call and time off of work. I'd buy a new one and save myself the lost work but it doesn't appear they've fixed the reliability issues. So sad for a Michigan company.I bought this Sidekick refrigerator and matching freezer for our new home on 04/2014. Place in to service on 09/2014. I am now in the midst of my 3rd service call(11/30/2015). Thank god I purchased the extended warranty through Whirlpool. But, that is proving to be junk as well.Factor in that the food loss coverage of $250 is over the life of the warranty, not per event. Each time I am without a refrigerator for 2 - 3 weeks while parts are ordered. I lose time at work to meet the service people. This is the most basic refrigerator there is. No features or bells and whistles and it won't cool. Not to mention we have cabinets built around this unit.Worst purchase ever.

I am now on my second model of this frig. Our cabinets were built around this unit so I am stuck with something equivalent to this size. I discovered the death of the first frig when we returned from a trip to Disney.... lost everything!!! My current one started leaking out the front. Found the drain line was stopped up... fixed that. But now it fluctuates in temperature so much I am losing contents. I do not want to go back with the same brand. I know this is a whirlpool site but does anyone have a suggestion of a different brand? It is ridiculous to have to replace this unit every 4 years!!! Who can afford to do that?????
Not happy!!10/21/2019 02:14 AM
Good units working well. Getting used to the new units, working well. Ongoing problems with the install. Our dealer has been out twice and still not correct. My wife is not happy. Our installer tells us Whirlpool removed the rear levelers which makes this very hard. I would ask why Whirlpool doesn’t have strips of metal to bolt the refrigerator and freezer together on the top and bottom. This would insure positive spacing and only the leveling would have to be accomplished.

Look no where else for that large fridge and freezer! We purchased the individual units and the ice maker attachment and trim kit. For the money it’s amazing! We have champagne taste on a beer budget! We always wanted the $10,000 fancy spacious unit but it wasn’t in our budget. This one is everything we could have wanted the tons of storage, organization bins and the I’ve maker has more space than our previous one. We are in love! Look no where else! This unit is also so much easy to keep clean than others more expensive. They’ve come along way on the finger print resistance. Use the stainless steel wipes once a week and you’ll be so pleased. We have a large family and I like a clean crisp look. For the money you can not go wrong, amazing value, quiet, tons of cubic sqft. I’ve told everyone I know about this unit and several friends purchased after seeing ours it’s a must buy!

I bought this in August 2021. In September 2024, it failed, three weeks after the warranty expired. The old 30 year old fridge is still working. Over half the reviews are given one star. A frequent criticism is early failure of the cooling process, same as mine. Whirlpool offered me a 25% discount on a new one but what it really needs to do is fix the problem. Also I am on an island in Georgian Bay so the cost of getting the service people, who are located in North Bay ON, is very high. Frankly it would be cheaper to get a new fridge but a 25% discount is not enough for a product that apparently fails early with frequency.

I bought this 2 years ago and it has had tons of problems with noisy compressor and cooling alert always going on. Latest is it wont cool. Just paid $98 to Flamingo Appliance Service telling me it will be $600 to replace the evaporator and drier. They spent 10 minutes of work to tell me that. they don't have the parts today and now I have to take off another day of work next week, if they can find the parts. What is worse, is they even say no one at Whirpool answers the phone to get parts. which is true. Since i just tried 8 times and kept getting a message to call back. same with chat. cuts me off on chat line too. so disappointing on so many levels with Whirlpool.

This was my second fridge(same crappy model)because my first one didn’t last either.. like other reviewers I had the same issue as the picture will show, but I can’t believe whirlpool hasn’t got their act together specially for how long these issues have been carrying on for.I bought 2 fridges since the date 2015 2nd one bought may 27 2019 & now ready for the dump! Pretty sad when your paying 4000$ for a combo that they know will fail from the get go. Customer service is no better, long waits & no help whatsoever.. I will never buy a whirlpool product ever again! Just purchased an LG from Costco with rave reviews so let’s hope this last

I strongly suggest not purchasing this product. We purchased in 2020 and by this year both are starting to not work. The refrigerator stopped cooling and experience over temp alerts starting 6 months ago. Just this week the same alert started on our freezer. I’m sure it will go bad too. We had to buy another refrigerator and keep it in our garage to not lose all our food. When I call customer service I am told that nothing can be done because it is outside of the 12 month warranty. If I am paying thousands of dollars for a refrigerator and freezer they should last longer than 3 years. They are built into our cabinets so it is a big deal that they no longer work and we cannot just replace them with any model. I agree with the comments that these units may be lemons. They clearly have issues impacting many customers. If a car had an issue like this they would issue a recall and repair at no cost. Whirlpool should stand by its products and support its customers. I will be sure to share this experience with all my contacts.

We bought the side kick freezer and fridge when we built our house( we designed the kitchen around it). Ugh! The first fridge broke 4 times( same problem stopped cooling) whirlpool replaced it. We bought an extended warranty and now 13 mo later same issue. I called on September 1, 2016. It is now October 19,2016 and we are still waiting for the repair service to get parts. Ugh! Living out of a cooler for 7 weeks and spending a bunch on groceries and ice. Not happy at all.. Please, please, please save your money. We are stuck now because we designed the kitchen around this stupid thing so we can't even go get a different fridge because it will look stupid.

My husband and I purchased a large freezer and refrigerator less than 3 years ago on 12/17/2016. Unfortunately for us we did not read the reviews and went with what the appliance store told us. We happily had the fridge and freezer for a year and 5 months when the refrigerator stopped staying cold....we thought it was a fluke and whirlpool actually covered the parts and labor ($900) despite it being past the one year warranty. In September 2019...not even 6 months later the refrigerator got warm again....and it was then we read the reviews on this refrigerator....it won't last...compressor keeps failing. We are so sad we built our cabinets around this set and another set won't fit..but we are buying a different fridge...we lost $400 in food and MEDICATIONS last year and lost another $400 in food and MEDICATIONS again...we can't keep doing this. I posted all one stars as the capacity and looks are GREAT...but if it doesn't FUNCTION it doesn't matter.

Beautiful set. Focal point in kitchen everyone remarks about it! Refrigerator stopped cooling properly, Coolant leaked out, evaporator doesn't work and compressor needs to be replaced. $1600.00 to repair. We have to do it, they don't make them the same size any longer and freezer is working fine and there is a whole to fill in the kitchen. I think we should get MORE than 5 1/2 years out of a refrigerator. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!

We bought the Freezer/Refrigerator set years ago. The good news is they look great and the Freezer has been problem free. The Refrigerator has constantly been a problem. I think I am on my 3rd or 4th refrigerator (and several compressor repairs) and in October the sealed system/compressor failed on the refrigerator I had just purchased in November 2021 ($1,100 repair covered by 1 year warranty). That repair took about 3 months to fix. I sought to purchase an extended warranty and since it was now out of warranty (since the repair took so long), it will cost $800 for the warranty. Whirlpool needs to produce a quality product and stand behind it if it isn't!!

The all refrigerator is exactly what I want. Lots of space for everything. 4 vegetable drawers give me so much more space for fresh veggies

I bought a set (fridge/freezer) Jan 2019 and a year later the fridge broke. Had a repair done and 3 months later it broke again. My warranty was up so I was forced to buy another to match up with the freezer because whirlpool would not repair again. Took 4 months to get it.. Right away it was bad. Put it on recommended setting and it was not keeping it at a required temp. Food was going bad. Had to set it at max and its barely keeping it at required temp to keep food from spoiling. I have an old whirlpool in the garage and it works like a champ. Bad choice of model to get. Will not buy another one like this. Might consider a different brand.

I bought this fridge 4 years ago from Sears --- it has broken 3 times in these 4 years. Once it broke the first time I elected to pay 200$ for the extended warranty through Sears. Sears is no longer around and Whirlpool doesn't stand by their product at all. I own rental properties and when I had an LG fridge break after 5 years, LG offered an extended warranty plan. Whirlpool on the other hand offers nothing, even though their product was defective within 18 months of purchasing it. Worst company ever! Do not buy this Refrigerator. I will never buy Whirlpool again.

We went through 3 Sidekick freezers in our first year (the VP of Whirlpool was very kind), and 2 refrigerators. That was 2013. Here we are in 2021, and our fridge has given up the ghost. Like many other reviewers, we can’t fit anything else in the built ins. No option for repair; and no units available. Thank goodness we have a reliable Samsung in the garage! But what will we do for a fridge in the kitchen???? Has anyone found an alternative? Really, after 8 years I would expect American ingenuity to have fixed the issues with the Sidekicks. We love to buy American, but will avoid all Whirlpool-affiliated products henceforth.

Bought the sidekick refrigerator & freezer about 5 years ago. Like many other reviewers, the refrigerator stopped working and cannot be repaired. Looking at the responses to the reviews by Whirlpool, they would indicate that Whirlpool, is concerned about the quality and reputation of their products and would take responsibility for them. Unfortunately, don't waste your time contacting them. Your will sit on hold for an eternity and then be told that the product is out of warranty and you are on your own. This product has quality problems as evidenced by over half the reviews being negative. However, the company does not seem to care.

After two years of having this refrigerator we noticed it wasn't keeping our food cold - after two years! Not too happy about paying anything to get it fixed. I hope it's nothing expensive :(
