Stacking is a pair plus a kit, not a shelf
A stacked laundry pair is two front-load machines joined by the manufacturer's own stacking kit, with the dryer on top of the washer. GE Appliances states the rule plainly in its stacking instructions: the washer is never installed on top of the dryer, and the kit is an optional part offered for particular front-load models rather than one part that fits everything. So check your pair's manual for the part number it names before you order a kit.
Those instructions are written for front-load pairs and for a matching dryer, so the question is never whether two machines look stackable — it is whether the maker publishes a kit for those two model numbers. The section headings below say which of the machines on this page the manufacturer data marks stackable.
Closet depth, venting and the height you actually need
Measure the closet opening at its narrowest point, then measure the depth with the door in place — a door that closes on a dryer vent is what turns a pair that measures fine on paper into one that does not fit. The finished height is the two machines plus the kit, and the dryer's controls end up near eye level, so leave the clearances the installation instructions state at the top and rear.
Venting decides what else is possible. A conventional dryer has to duct to the outside. A heat-pump dryer runs as a closed loop and, as ENERGY STAR puts it, needs no dryer vent at all because it does not push air out of the house — which is why heat-pump and condenser models turn up in closets and apartments where a duct run is impossible. ENERGY STAR also draws the size line at 4.4 cubic feet: standard-size dryers are 4.4 cubic feet or larger, compact dryers smaller than that.
Stacked pair, laundry center, or one-drum combo
A laundry center (and the tower-style units several brands now sell) arrives as a single cabinet with the washer and dryer already in one frame: nothing to stack, no kit to buy, and no choice about which machine sits on top. A washer-dryer combination goes further and does both jobs in one drum, so a load washes and then dries in sequence rather than moving to a second machine.
